Winter-flowering plants are rightly held in high esteem – those with scent even more so. That several shrubs in this category flower upon bare stems, the leaves not deigning to put in an appearance until spring, has always fascinated me. One such is Viburnum x bodnantense ‘Dawn’, whose pink and white flowers waft their sweet fragrance across the garden on the coldest of days. A vigorous grower with good autumn colour, it can bear hard pruning, which is best done in spring once the flowers have faded.
