Day 39: houseplant company

Daily details from the garden to bring you inspiration throughout the year

Plants, like people, were not made to live their lives in total solitude. And yet we isolate specimen shrubs and trees in our gardens, and confine our houseplants to individual pots, dotted about our homes in splendid segregation. The more we understand about how plants relate to one another, the more we appreciate that this isn’t how it’s meant to be. There are cultural advantages for keeping individual houseplants grouped together – raising humidity levels, for example. This year, I want to start planting more of them together in the same container – fewer pots for me to buy but, more importantly, happier plants.
