I spent a good while this morning hoeing through weedlings of hairy bittercress (Cardamine hirsuta) that were enjoying their first flush of growth in a client’s flowerbed (there are limits to my fondness for weeds). Of course it’s flourishing in my garden too right now, and probably yours, but of more interest is its larger cousin, cuckoo flower or lady’s smock (Cardamine pratensis). Sitting on the grassy slope at home, having managed to narrowly miss getting a thistle up my bum, I found myself in the company of wood avens, Arum italicum and just a scattering of this pretty wildflower, buds a few days shy of opening to reveal dainty, flowers of the prettiest pale mauve.
