Day 117: fashionably late to sow

Daily details from the garden to bring you inspiration throughout the year

And we’re off! Sauntering up to the starting block several moments after everyone else has sprinted around the first corner, I performed the annual ritual of scraping the surface of the potting bench clean and treating it to a coat or two of wax. Such preliminaries can only mean one thing and, sure enough, tired module trays were produced from heaven-knows-where, spiders gently evacuated (snails with slightly less ceremony), and peat-free compost sieving has commenced, prior to the inevitable sowing of seeds. Zinnias and cosmos are in, some lettuce and chard (we’re still going with the winter lettuce here!). Tomorrow, possibly the latest sweet-peas ever to be sown. Unless they’re enormously early for 2022.
