Another season when the lack of rain is saving us from manky forget-me-not syndrome. Just as last year, the plants have been extended the privilege of going gracefully to seed without simultaneously turning into a grey-black mildewed mess, and the handover from spring to summer can proceed in an orderly fashion as aquilegias and lady’s mantle (Alchemilla mollis) shuffle forward to take centre stage in the scrappier, wilder portions of the border, away from the refined dignity of roses and paeonies. Being perennial, you could cut back the forget-me-nots and leave them to flower next year, but it’s easier to hoik them out whole and shake the drying seeds out over the soil.
