Day 217: montbretia

Daily details from the garden to bring you inspiration throughout the year

Two things are undeniably true about montbretia, that pernicious crocosmia (Crocosmia x crocosmiiflora) ubiquitous to our gardens and naturalised throughout so much of the countryside. Firstly, it’s very pretty, and secondly, it’s a complete git. Sometimes I waver over deciding which of these facets of its character is the more important, but of course, it’s the second. It quickly takes over any area in which it’s planted, and though it’s not difficult to dig out, removing each and every corm from the soil is something of a Sisyphean task, resulting in it never truly going away. Clearly, it would be foolish of me to think I might be winning in eradicating it from this patch. (Don’t let it hear, but I was still pleased to see its cheerful orange flowers appear this week.)
