Daily details from the garden to bring you inspiration throughout the year

If you’re going to grow the Peruvian lily, or alstroemeria, you really need to commit to it. It’s something of a wanderer, and will merrily breeze through your borders, popping up through other plants at will where you least expected it, which is wonderful if you’re a fan, but not so great if you find yourself indifferent to its charms. There’s a no doubting either its work ethic or its vivaciousness – and having a particularly long vase life, they also make for a fantastic cut flower, which is probably how I prefer to see them, unless in a more exotic or tropical-type planting. Including them in more traditional cottage-garden style schemes always puts me in mind of a family of tigers wandering about the village fete.
