Upon the list of winter-flowering shrubs that stimulate schnoz, witch hazel (Hamamelis sp.) ranks high – spiced-fruit scent wafting across the icy air in the garden, and filling the home with perfume when cut for the vase. The flowers have a singular appearance – zested orange or lemon peel festooned upon bare branches. Choose a variety with good autumn leaf colour, but in the hotter months expect little more than a mid-green foil to more attention-grabbing plants.
