Everyone loves a dazzling floral display in summer, but those plants that can maintain interest through the colder seasons are greatly to be prized. While we’re waiting for the colour of spring, texture, rhythm and subtlety are the watchwords in the borders. Drifts of plants provide repeating patterns to delight the eye; grasses of course, but also perennials like Hylotelephium ‘Matrona’ earn their keep, their toothsome drabs imparting delicious visual crunch, not least when coated with dustings of frost.
