So many great things about this little cushion of green with its tiny leaves, not least being able to say “mind your own business” to people when they enquire after its name. The botanical honorific, Soleirolia soleirolii, is a little more of a tongue twister and not quite so much fun. Two further things must you know about this plant: it makes gorgeous, compact emerald mounds when planted in pots but, let loose on the ground (particularly around paving where it thrives) it will colonise rapidly – which is a good thing if you’re a fan of creeping, verdant vegetation, but can be a royal pain in the arsenic and old lace if you like to keep things looking super crisp and tidy. It will probably die off above ground over winter, but will quickly recover in spring. Possibly a bit of a Marmite plant – for what it’s worth, I love it.
