Day 100: Tulipa turkestanica

Daily details from the garden to bring you inspiration throughout the year

Species tulips are a bit special. Smaller, a touch more refined and less showy than the big blousey hybrids that we all love – perhaps they’re a flower for the enthusiast. If I’m brutally honest, they’re not particularly tulipy at all – for one thing, the narrow foliage is quite attractive and well behaved. These are the tulips as you’d find them in the wild in Turkey and central Asia, and their very near relatives. Tulipa turkestanica, with its egg-yolk yellow centres and white star-shaped flowers – up to twelve to a stem – is a fine example, fragrant and early into flower. It likes a little sun, and not too much wind. But then, don’t we all.
