I don’t care what you think you’ve achieved; if you’ve not sat and gazed at a fern unfurling, you’ve not yet lived. For while philosophers and scientists may occupy themselves with unravelling the workings of the universe, the enigma of how the complex geometry of a fern’s frond can be so perfectly packaged into the croziers should be mystery enough for anybody to meditate upon. If your ferns are currently looking a little congested with last year’s dead foliage, now’s the time to get out and have a tidy up, the better to watch the show.
