Off the beaten track on Battleston Hill in the Royal Horticultural Society’s gardens at Wisley
Under clear blue skies with sun bright overhead, take the narrow path into the trees, where the gusty wind stills, calmed by gently enveloping foliage. Soft ground patterned by canopy-filtered light, footsteps stealthy-slow, flanked on either side by greens never so fresh as these first few weeks in May. And in such combinations, such delicate patterns – spotty, furry pulmonaria, smooth lily-of-the-valley with its tiny white bells beneath Solomon’s seal’s creamy blooms, hanging delicately beneath each graceful, arching stem. Azaleas everywhere in shades of pink, yellow, coral, apricot... and I’m sure I should be being sniffy about these colour combinations but I’m just not in the mood. It’s all magical in here – spring in a woodland garden – and I don’t want to leave.
