I’m trying to think how I might incorporate some stone into our garden without it looking ridiculous. The hard landscaping materials presently complementing our suburban red brick house include gravel and some revolting block pavers on the driveway, the latter installed by our predecessor and currently boasting a fine crop of weeds which I leave for as long as possible so I don’t have to look at the awful blocks. I can’t mentally picture how stone would fit in, but long for the opportunity to gaze upon its community of plants, lichens and mosses. I wander up to the wonderful gardens at Great Comp, where any alarm at the sheer outrageousness of the follies and faux ruins is soon replaced by wonder as you walk among them, inspecting the plants that clamber and cling, glowing green on a rainy afternoon. Just now, I don’t have the budget to build a folly, so I’ll restrict my stone-gazing activities to other people’s gardens.
