Day 204: Achillea ptarmica ‘The Pearl’

Daily details from the garden to bring you inspiration throughout the year

With Achillea ptarmica ‘The Pearl’ planted only a few feet away from Helenium ‘Moerheim Beauty’ (see Day 190), I realise I have sneezewort and sneezeweed in the same border. I may have to rechristen it the Snuff Bed, though I can’t say either plant has caused my nose to so much as twitch (unlike any flavour of phlomis, which sets me off like nothing on earth, with the possible exception of fresh chilli in a stir fry). These little white pompoms on long slender stems, with fine, willow like leaves, might not be a showstopper like the blowsy dahlias we’re starting to enjoy just now, and neither are they exactly the glue that binds a scheme together. Rather, they’re the sparkly glitter sprinkled over your creation at the very end. Best to stake with pea sticks or brushwood, though – nobody likes floppy glitter.
