Daily details from the garden to bring you inspiration throughout the year
It was obviously going to be a great year for blackberries. Not because of the rampant incursion of vigorous, thick primocanes (next year’s fruiting stems) into the garden following a wet June and a warm spell in July – something similar happens most years. But because of the generosity of the blossom covering this year’s canes, their delicate pink and white silks replaced by jewel colour berries bursting with deep purple juice. Not many have yet made it to the kitchen, as we cram the fruits greedily into our gobs – though we must make an effort to harvest and freeze for pies and smoothies, and rich thick compotes to stir into porridge. And of course, to add colour and that sweet, tangy depth to crumbles, and fill the house with the scent of baked blackberry juice, echoed throughout autumn by the brambles on the bonfire.
