A delicate annual grass often grown for the vase, where the long slender stems and fat fluffy ‘bunny tail’ flowers of Lagurus ovatus are valued in either fresh or dried arrangements. And this gives some indication of its versatility in the garden too, fresh greens and buff-colours with the faintest suggestion of something pink or mauve in certain lights, fading to all over-biscuit tones by late summer. This was how I first encountered it, in a garden by the dunes at Camber Sands, a wind-blown mass of texture, alternately soft and crisp, pale taupes against the shingle and the blue-greens of sea kale leaves.
