Still on the subject of trees for small gardens (having been waxing lyrical on the delights of crabapples a couple of days ago), the North American Redbud (Cercis canadensis ‘Forest Pansy’) deserves a place towards the top of the list. The purple, heart-shaped leaves are beautiful in their own right, emerging in shades of bright garnet before deepening to plummier hues for summer, then shifting through orange and yellow before falling in autumn. Sprays of pale pink, pea-like flowers are produced in spring as a bonus, but it’s really the foliage that you’ll want this one for. I first saw it in Dan Pearson’s Home Ground, where it graces the back cover but also appears as a leitmotif running through the book, leaning Narcissus like over a wide reflecting bowl of water.
