Of all the many reasons to grow asters (including Symphyotrichum, Eurybia and others too numerous or nerdy to mention just now), their fluffy button-ness rarely gets a mention. But after the late summer display which endears these floriferous daisies to so many of us – and providing the dreaded mildew has kept away – the seedheads form, gracing our borders and beds with so many tiny buff-coloured pompoms speckled with seeds – each a tighter, more compressed version of a dandelion clock. Cutting back at this stage would be a joyless act of criminality – leave for the frost, the critters and the birds, and enjoy a while longer.
