Daily details from the garden to bring you inspiration throughout the year
Viburnum tinus could be excused for being a little miffed. Entirely overlooked in favour of Dawn, the smelly relative (Viburnum x bodnantense ‘Dawn’, flowering on bare wood in winter), upstaged by snowdrops and crocuses and hellebores, it quietly and reliably accessorises its evergreen foliage with bridal sprays of tiny white flowers, blushing pink on some varieties, emerging from densely packed green-white buds. A solid backdrop to more showy plant personalities, it is perhaps the perfect consigliere, happy to take a step back and let others shine. Just don’t mention viburnum leaf beetle, for fear the whole shrub will uproot itself and head for the hills.
