Day 113: hints of wisteria

Daily details from the garden to bring you inspiration throughout the year

The first blossom on the wisteria is out. A hint of what’s to come, the merest breath, but a closer look at the unprepossessing grey stems, packed with fat buds in various states of undress, suggests we’re in for quite a show. It’s fascinating to watch the colour bleed into the long panicles, emerging as smoke and ash, taking on the white and lilac as the petals open. Just now, there is no untoward funny business going on with drainpipes and gutters – probably for the first time in years. Such restraint is most unlikely to endure overlong.
