Day 193: gardening opinions

Daily details from the garden to bring you inspiration throughout the year

We can often find ourselves frustrated with the crowds at plant shows or gardens; so many people, getting in the way of our photographs. But this is to ignore the immense pleasure of eavesdropping on other people’s opinions, such as the two ladies overheard wandering through the abundantly packed plantings at Great Dixter this afternoon. “How do they ever garden here?”, said the first. “I don’t think they do”, her friend replied. “There’s a huge dandelion there!”. All of this, I felt like saying, waving my arms about incredulously at the impeccably put together, generously planted magnificence of it all, and you zero in on a bloody dandelion!? It caused me first to wonder just what kind of gardening isn’t happening here. And secondly, to pray that it never does.
