I think I’d almost grow the teasel for its botanical name alone – there’s something very satisfying about intoning ‘Dipsacus fullonum!’, loudly, as if it were some kind of Potterish incantation. But it’s a handsome plant too and, having spent the past months hunkering low to the ground as a rosette of large, spear-shaped leaves with a characteristic pale midrib, the time has come for it to launch its spiky stems skyward. Soon the tiny mauve blooms will open in tonsured rings around each flowerhead, and bees will make...well, a beeline for their nectar. Remaining as a distinctive silhouette through the winter, the seeds an important source of food for goldfinches, this is one weed that’s too good to leave outside the garden.
