Day 210: globe thistle

Daily details from the garden to bring you inspiration throughout the year

Summer here would be incomplete without the lavender blue lollipops of the globe thistle, Echinops ritro, just coming into flower. A trouble-free addition to the garden and loved by bees, butterflies and hoverflies, they contribute mounds of handsome, spiny foliage to the general volume of border before raising multiple stems, each topped mace-like with a single spiked ball which gradually bursts into bloom in waves of violet blue. Stick with the cool colour scheme by planting it with perovskias and agastache, or mix it up with grasses and echinacea – it’s hard to think of anything that won’t by complemented by its presence. Easy to propagate by division in the spring or autumn, which is a mercy, as you can never have too much.
