Day 296: Bear's breeches

Daily details from the garden to bring you inspiration throughout the year

Proof positive that my bear’s breeches do occasionally flower, if you’ll pardon the expression. Of course I’m talking about my acanthus, whose leaf seems neither sufficiently finely cut to be A. spinosus nor quite gently lobed enough to be A. mollis – so somewhere inbetween. Not only has it flowered, but also set seed, which seems entirely surplus to requirements since it spreads so readily from the roots. In spite of its refusal to provide me with more than two flower spikes a year – and these often barely topping the generous mounds of foliage – I really am fond of the damn thing and find it a handsome presence in the border in all of its life stages. How could you not love those fat seed pods, sitting on their spiny seat under a broad canopy? I guess I’ll have to put up with its intransigence for another year.
