Day 321: the West Ham bush

Daily details from the garden to bring you inspiration throughout the year

Returning to a familiar garden today, I noticed a shrub I’d whose presence I’d never before remarked upon. Winking out at us from a border were the unmistakable claret and blue of West Ham United (Villa, I suppose, if you’re more Midlands inclined), and there’s only one plant I know of that rocks these colours in the middle of November. This is Clerondendum trichotomum, whose glorious hues and pompous binomial are only bettered by its common appellation as the ‘harlequin glorybower’. Fortunately, it had already dropped its leaves, so we were spared the argument over whether the foliage smelt delightfully of peanuts or more like old socks. Still. Come on, you Irons.
