Not much of a looker, and kind of patchily bald in winter, when it can’t quite make up it’s mind whether it’s evergreen or not (the books classify it as “semi-evergreen”, a description that inspires as much confidence as “a bit dead”). But you plant winter honeysuckle (Lonicera fragrantissima) for its scent, rather than its looks – and it doesn’t disappoint with an uplifting fragrance full of depth as well as fruity top notes – perhaps a bit more subtle on the nose than daphne, but not dissimilar. One to plant by a door.
