Day 185: sowing again

Daily details from the garden to bring you inspiration throughout the year

Gaps are appearing. Holes in plantings where earlier perennials have flowered and are being cut back and annuals have done their thing. Room on the greenhouse staging as plants are moved out to harden before planting. And window ledges – not that I’m blessed with many – finally free of tender plants, each space presenting an opening for something new. All of this is telling me to get sowing again and, barring a few succession crops of lettuce, that’s not something I ordinarily do at this time of year – a little early for hardy annuals. But I’m taking another look at my various seed boxes, from which I often feel a sense of disapproval radiates at opportunities missed, and feeling enthused at the idea of raising the next cohort of seedlings. The gaps won’t last for long.
