It’s noticeably warmer in the garden – almost uncomfortably toasty. At precisely this time every year Crocosmia ‘Lucifer’ appears in the borders – tall strappy green leaves already making their presence felt, the more so with fiery red flowers bobbing above them on arching stems. Still in bud this week, just now he seems suspiciously coy, though I expect a devilish flourish at any moment. Despite reputation, not as thuggish as montbretia (Crocosmia x crocosmiiflora), the diminutive cousin, a plant that’s as much of a curse as a blessing, happily brightening any corner you might think of putting it and then refusing to stop growing as a well-mannered plant ought. By comparison, Lucifer will multiply at a steady but sufficiently sedate pace, allowing you time to divide a clump and offer a pot to each of several friends before things get hellishly out of hand.
