It’s taken me years to appreciate nepeta. Perhaps, as with our feline friends, catnip doesn’t quite get us all in the same way – while one cat will completely flatten a plant with its wriggling ecstasies, another may just pass on by. I find the scent slightly off-putting, with something a little unpleasant lurking towards the musky end – for a plant with a similar visual effect, I’d rather bear with lavender’s tendency to leap into legginess at the earliest opportunity. But perhaps lemon catnip (Nepeta cataria ‘Citriodora’) might change my mind – with its grey green foliage and white flowers, I’m finding just looking at it to be particularly restful, and the citrus notes are welcome too.
