Day 328: winter weedlings

Daily details from the garden to bring you inspiration throughout the year

Almost winter. The garden is drawing itself inward, but nobody seems to have told the weeds. Fine crops of juvenile foliage are appearing on perennial nettles, rosettes of cow parsley huddle the ground while extending ever-outward to claim their space. In between the forget-me-nots (we’re not calling those weeds in this garden, where we like them, though in the next one we don’t, so we are. Confused? You should be) petty spurge (Euphorbia peplus) appears, with clover and the leaves of sow thistle (Sonchus oleraceus), unless it’s dandelion (Taraxacum officinale) – I’ll probably be able to tell you in a week or so. Soon, mulch will arrive – still haven’t fixed that puncture in the wheelbarrow wheel – and that will put a hold on this, for a month or so. Until the weed seeds in the horse manure wake up in the gently warming sun of a late winter morning. So much life – it’s all rather encouraging.

A year of garden coaching

I’m very excited about my new venture – it’s a way for me to work with more people than I can physically get around to, helping them to make the very best of their gardens in a way that suits the life they lead. If you’d like to find out more, please click here to book for a January 2020 start.
