Day 60: kentia palm

Daily details from the garden to bring you inspiration throughout the year

The change from winter to spring brings a tricky little step-change into the life of the houseplant collector. We’ve eased off the watering over the darker months, but increased light levels means thirstier plants, and while some are able to bide their time, waiting for us to attend to their needs, others flop. Some (looking at you, maidenhair fern) just go crispy. At times like this, I’m always glad for stalwarts like the Kentia palm (Howea fosteriana), who maintain their poise throughout, waving us on to minister to the needier residents of the indoor jungle.
